What is happier than a bunch of balloons? They're colorful and festive, they bring joy to young and old alike, they celebrate everything from birthdays to . You can skip along the sidewalk with a whole bunch in your hand, humming and pretending you're about to be blown up into the sky. I had some fantastic balloons in my bunch last year, and it just kept growing: Bon Iver, Grand Archives, M. Ward. 2009 is like that same bunch of balloons two days later-a slightly delfated and depressing version of its former self. I would like to think the balloons haven't changed, that I've just spent so much time thinking about and commenting on the finer points of balloon quality, I'm getting harder and harder to impress. Or maybe it really is that I'm just getting old and crotchety. But it seems to me that there are less new bands, and the old bands I used to love are, well, slightly deflated and depressing versions of their former selves. Grand Archives, Yo La Tengo, The Avett Brothers, all of them have new albums that make me wish I had a new bunch of balloons. Turns out, no one sells balloons anymore-there's a severe shortage of new bands that have yet to wow me. Last year, Bon Iver made me feel like I was falling in love with indie music all over again. His new project, Volcano Choir, is less accessible, more obscure, and leaves me feeling like I just ran into an ex-boyfriend in the supermarket and we talked about green beans and can't tell whether he still likes me or not.

One of the few balloons that's just as bright and buoyant as the day I discovered it will be gracing WRGW with it's presence this Saturday! Wyatt and I will have the esteemed pleasure of interviewing Elizabeth and the Catapult as part of Octoberfest, WRGW's month-long series of live interviews and in-studio performances. Be sure to tune in at 2 p.m. EST to catch us chatting with a Vibrations of Nations favorite!

Before we get to the podcast, the first four song songs on the playlist are not on the podcast because we were facing grave technical difficulties (Read: Our computers outsmarted us.) So in order to make up for it, here is the trailer for the most anticipated film of this year by anyone between the ages of 16 and 25, Where the Wild Things Are. On it is a version of Arcades Fire's "Wake Up" we played in that first block. It will make you weep. Quiet literally. Our Rock Director actually can't watch it without crying.

And without further ado....

1. I was all alone-Wyatt was running around like a chicken with his head cut off, looking for a road to cross. Suddenly, an obscenely tall, dark figure filled the doorway, headphones dangling dangerously around his neck. "No," I thought. "It can't be...." But there he was, in all his glory, Josh the Intern. Risen from the depths of that school across the swamp that shall remain nameless, he came to complete our trio, even if only for two hours on a Sunday evening. Stars aligned, the planets hung in a perfect balance, and all was right with the world.
We here at Vibrations of Nations would like to believe that we reflect the current musical trends. While we were having our own little reunion, some other, and frankly less attractive and important people in some band called Pavement, decided to get back together and do a little touring. Starting in New York in 2010, Pavement will be bouncing around major cities all across the U.S. for the reunion tour! Between them and the Pixies, I feel like all those couples you thought were going to make it in high school, who then broke up in college, are getting back together to restore our faith in humanity.
We had quite a lot to celebrate, so Wyatt made is 278th run to his dorm to get balloons. Turns out balloons are filled with helium. Turns out helium makes you sound like a chipmunk. Turns out we never matured past 6th grade. Oh well. That's about the last time Pavement played together anyways, so let's just say we were in the mood.

(Apologies in advance for cutting off the first 20 seconds of the first song in the podcast. So for all those super busy, cancer-curing pastry chefs out there who missed the first Vibrations of Nations of the season, we got you covered. Below this exceedingly witty and intelligent post, you will see a nifty little player, and on that nifty little player, a swell little "play" button. Click it. I dare you. Fortune goes to the bold!

While we expect you to listen to it all the way through, relishing every moment of our melodic voices (and some other people's melodic voices too, I guess), here are some first show highlights:

-Wyatt's tie was colorful and embodied his chic sense of fashion, not to mention his impeccable taste in music.

-The new Throw Me the Statue album, Creaturesque, is the only sophomore effort this summer in which the band producing said album (cough Grand Archives cough) made musical progress. This undoubtedly has something to do with the addition of Pedro the Lion's Casey Foubert to the now quartet. Well done. TAKE THAT PITCHFORK.

-"Little Bitty Pretty One" is our theme song. This is not because we wish we were Matilda and could move all the CDs in the studio around our heads as we do our spinny office chair dance....

-There's only two things to do in Minnesota: 1) Get smashed. 2) Make music. Actually three. But we couldn't say the third one on air. I'll give you a hint: Sometimes getting smashed and a little music, not to mention it being -35 outside, makes it seem like a real good idea. These are not mutually exclusive, but I know Adam Young of Owl City does at least one.

-SURPRISE! We like hip-hop. It's true, we're not entirely indie-hipsters. We premiered a brand new band out of LA, Warm Brew, to a great reception on Facebook. Tune in for more of these guys in the next few weeks!

-PIXIES ARE TOURING. PIXIES ARE TOURING. PIXIES ARE TOURING. It's true-the Pixies have planned a U.S. tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album Doolittle. (I think I might've said 10th year on the air-okay, so I wish it were still 1999 and I could bedazzle something.) You can find out when they're coming to a city near you here. It must be the apocalypse, because life can only go downhill from there.

-"Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros was the best song of the summer. At his arrival, I executively decided that we are to have a new segment every week called "What About Josh?" Actually, it was called something far more clever than that, except I cannot remember for the life of me what it is. During this segment, we will ask Josh ridiculously embarrassing and obscure questions about his life and musical tastes. So await that impatiently, as I will.

Without further ado, here's the playlist from this week:

1. Ain't Got No / I Got Life (Groovefinder Remix)-Nina Simone
2. Cinnamon-The Long Winters
3. Shout-De Novo Dahl
4. California-Rogue Wave
5. Jimmy Brown-Bend Sinister
11. Both Ends Burning-Come On Gang!
12. Everything They Know About Us-The Salteens
13. Benton Harbor Blues (Again)-The Fiery Furnaces
14. Never Stop Loving You-Meredith Luce
15. I Can't Give You Up- Smoove & Turrell
16. Santa Clara-The National
17. Absurd Heroes Manifestos-Arthur & Yu
18. One Red Thread-Blind Pilot
19. My Good Deed-Shearwater
20. Wake Up-Princeton
21. I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked-Ida Maria
22. An Apple For An Apple-Miles Kurosky
23. Gotta Work-Amerie
24. Blood Bank-Bon Iver

We're still working out some technical kinks in recording our own podcasts right in the station, but we'll get it down so that you all can listen to us whenver you want! However, you will miss spectacular events such as my mother dancing to "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" if you just listen to the podcast. And I know that's the only reason you tune in...
Until next week, my amigos.

You're all lovely.

Watching Sleazy UFOs Passing By- Devil Mcdoom

Watching Sleazy UFOs Passing By - Devil Mcdoom

Contrary to the descriptive words in its title, "Watching Sleazy UFOs Passing By" is a classy, classy cut-n-paste instrumental. Devil Mcdoom, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, certainly knows his way around a break and a melody. He opens up the track with an ethereal, almost angelic vocal sample that forms the core of the song. The two other main elements cut in soon soon after, with Mcdoom splicing in a dope break and a bassline that could have been taken straight out of an old lounge jazz song- the bass clef notes flitting from the speakers until they take a much more concrete sound during the bass solo towards the end of the song. Mcdoom tops it all off with some spacey moog swooshes. Whenever I listen to this song I imagine fireflies on a muggy summer night, flying through a tree in a secluded field. That's just me though...

Cult Status- 1990s

"My cult status keeps me alive"

This band has got to be one of my favorites in the history of time. The amount of swagger and braggadocio they have seems impossible, given their slight stature and small numbers. And yet, somehow, they achieve a level of bad-assery and bravado unheard of (by me at least) in many years. The frontman and singer, Jackie McKeown, had been kicking around the Scottish indie scene for a while, before 1990s came together. Formerly of The Yummie Furs, McKeown was something of a golden boy around Glasgow. When that band broke up, he languished in relative obscurity for a few years before forming 1990s. 1990s only intended to play a few parties thrown by McKeown's friends, but after their sixth show ever, they were approached by Rough Trade Records, (one of my favorite labels) and Cookies, one of my favorite albums ever, was recorded soon after that.

"Cult Status" is currently my favorite track on Cookies; it is supremely ill. Completely self-serving, full of constant skewerings of pop-culture- this song is almost too cool for school. Combine all this with a rhythm section that kicks you right in the pants, and you have a song that is unstoppable.

Cult Status - 1990s

Here's an extra gem: 1990s is set to release their sophomore album, Kicks, in March. This moment marks the valmorphinization of the Vibrations of Nations blog from a lame, lackadaisical, ..., l-infrequently updated blog to what we hope will be an un-sucky, un-epic fail, un-bad site for folks who love music.

*Note to reader: All future alliteration will be much more illmatic... or so we hope. We'll brush up on our word nerd skills.

First off on the laundry list of things we have to do in this entry- the show itself. Programming at WRGW hadn't officially started yet when we went on, so we did an extended show because no one was on after us. Despite the fact that there was a fire alarm, an errand I had to try and complete during the show, and the fact that Eb and I are constantly forgetful, it was an illin' show, and a fun time all.

By the way, the show starts about three and a half minutes into the recording

Here's the playlist:

Sonnet- Will Stratton
Black Creek- Valery Gore
Scythian Empire- Andrew Bird (I am obsessed with this song)
Some Things We Lose- Baby Eagle
(words)
Oh Paris!- Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele
Time Breaks Down- Bend Sinister
The Ballad Of Old Bull Lee- Arthur & Yu
Start a War- The National
(words)
Selfish Jean- Travis
By And By- Lay Low
Meet Me By The Water- Saturday Looks Good To Me
Holland, 1945- Neutral Milk Hotel
(words)
Upon Viewing Brueghel's "Landscape With the Fall of Icarus"- Titus Andronicus
Lolita- Throw Me The Statue
The Bronze Beached Boys (Come On Let's Go)- Pas/Cal
Marry Song- Band of Horses
(words)
Edge of the Ocean- Ivy
Make You Crazy feat. From this point forward, this blog will not only serve as a means of listening to our show on the internet, it will also be a music blog. Y'know, like this one, one of my favorites.

That being said, my first two songs of recommendation to you, the reader and listener, are epic indeed.

The Born Ruffians hail from Midland, Ontario (that's Canadia for anyone not familiar with the provinces of Canadaland) but have since moved to Toronto. I played "I Need a Life" on this week's show, but I love it so much that it deserves extra mention. The singer, Luke LaLonde, has the kind of voice that always sounds like it's going to mature, but never really does until after years of chain-smoking and hard living. Even though it's high-pitched and wavery, it's surprisingly strong thoughout the song. The rhythm section keeps it simple with the drummer and the bass player chugging along behind the vocals and guitar.

I only discovered Pas/Cal recently, but they are already one of my favorite bands. They have a really fantastic sound- polished, really pop-influenced, and sunshiny. Their melodies are what really set them apart- I've never heard a band with as many amazing vocal hooks in my life. Casimer Pascal, the leader of the band, really knows how to put a song together. Couple all this with fantastic production values (Pascal is reportedly a perfectionist in the studio) and you have one of the best debut LPs I've ever heard.

11/9/08: Return of the Podcast!

After a lengthy hiatus, we're back with another podcast!
